Premiering at the 2025 Festival de Cannes as part of theStraight 8 Competition, The Return of The Screw is a four-minute horror short filmed entirely on Super 8 by Cosmo Fletcher and Wolf Newton.

For this work, composition and sound design converge into a single gesture. Every sound is drawn from the human voice: operatic tones, fractured choirs, whispered textures, reimagined through extensive manipulation and distortion. Male voices embody the authority of the church; female voices recall those persecuted as witches, their presence returning in spectral defiance.

The score and soundscape form a parallel narrative: at once music and noise, real and unreal, corporeal and imagined. Through this vocal architecture, the boundary between diegetic and non-diegetic dissolves, giving horror its most essential element: a sonic world that unsettles, disorients, and haunts long after the image fades.
